The Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana will be the first race of the season where our African Team’s group of climbers will get to test their early season form. The UCI 2.1 race will begin on Wednesday 1st February in Orihuela, Spain and will conclude after 5 stages on Sunday the 5th in Valencia.
The 68th Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana will serve as the opening race of the season for all 8 Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders that will line up at the stage 1, 38km team time trial on Wednesday. The race against the clock is sure going to be a shock to the system after quite some time away from racing, but it is the 4 hilly road stages that our African Team will be targeting.
Serge Pauwels, Ben King, Igor Anton, Kristian Sbaragli and our African contingent of Daniel Teklehaimanot, Merhawi Kudus, Adrien Niyonshuti and Johann van Zyl will all feel quite at home on the consistently undulating roads around Valencia. Stage 4 is the only stage to end with a summit finish and this, together with the team time trial, should be where the biggest moves in the overall general classification will take place.
Benjamin King – Rider
After a long and satisfying off-season and preseason, I am really excited to get back to racing and starting off with my new team. I’m looking forward to getting back into the rhythm of racing in Valencia and taking some opportunities during the race. It is our first race, so just to get to working together is important, it sets the tone and puts in place the foundation of how we work together. For sure we will use the race to iron out some kinks but already there is such a good atmosphere in the team that we might surprise ourselves.
