The 2nd stage of the Volta ao Algarve was won by Dan Martin (Quickstep-Floors), he was able to out sprint Primoz Roglic (Lotto-Soudal) at the top of the Alto da Foia. Michal Kwiatkoski (Team Sky) took 3rd place on the day.
The 2nd stage of the Volta ao Algarve was to be the first summit finish of the race with the 189km stage culminating with the 9km climb of Alto da Foia. There was an early breakaway of 8 riders who enjoyed some freedom over the first half of the race. The final 90km though was littered with constant undulations and so it was easy enough for the peloton to bring the race all back together. With 38km to go, there was all to play for.
For Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka it did not work out to be the best of days though. Steve Cummings, Omar Fraile and Edvald Boasson Hagen were our 3 riders we had hoped would arrive at the bottom of the final climb in the leading group. As it turned out, only Scott Thwaites was able to make the select group that started the final climb first.
Unfortunately due to illness, Cummings was not able to finish today’s stage. With no results to speak of today and all GC hopes gone, our African Team will regather during tomorrow’s time trial and then take on the final 2 stages with the ambition to win both.

We started the day planning to keep our GC options open. Cummings, Omar and Edvald were our 3 protected riders that everyone would ride for and then we would see what was possible on GC after they completed the final climb. The guys who were working did their jobs very well but for one reason or another, be it illness and stomach problems it wasn’t to be with our 3 leaders. Now we just need to focus on stage 4 which we will go 100% for with Cavendish. Stage 5 is another uphill final but not as difficult as today so we have options for that stage too.
