The Tour of California is set to take place from the 14th – 20th May and for the first time, the American race will form part of the UCI World Tour. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka will once again be at the start of this great race and we are excited for what is in store over the coming 7 stages.
Initially Mark Cavendish was meant to headline our African Team at the Tour of California this year, but after our ace sprinter was diagnosed with the Epstein Barr Virus, we have had to adapt our strategy for America’s premier road cycling race. Subsequently, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka is now able to provide an opportunity to two of our exciting young talents. Reinardt Janse van Rensburg will lead our team on the flat to medium mountain stages while Lachlan Morton takes charge on the climbing days.
Stages 1, 3, 4 and 7 is where Janse van Rensburg will most likely look to shine. Morton will certainly target the 5th stage, the queen stage which finishes at the top of Mount Baldy, and our Australian could fair well during stage 2 too, another big climbing day. Stage 6 will be the tough “altitude” 24km time trial around Big Bear Like which is expected to decide the overall GC. Our 2 leaders will be able to count on the experience and firepower of Bernhard Eisel, Scott Thwaites, Mark Renshaw, Tyler Farrar, Nic Dougall and Ben King during the Tour of California.

I am happy to be in sunny California and really looking forward to the race. It is a World Tour event this year and the team is excited to be here. There are quite a few stages which are good for our team. This year we will also have an option in the GC with Lachlan here, so we can’t wait to get going already and show our colours at the head of the race daily.
