Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had a strong finish to Tour de Slovénie as Mark Cavendish sprinted to second place after Sam Bennett (BORA – hansgrohe) on the last stage of the race.
As it has been custom in the previous stages of the Slovenian stage race, it didn’t take long for an early breakaway to establish a gap on the peloton. Six riders made it up the road but with the teams of the sprinters setting the pace in the pack, the breakaway was always kept within reach. The Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders had saved their legs on yesterday’s mountain top finish and they were all very eager to finish off the race with a good performance.
All the teams of the top the sprinters worked well together at the front of the pack and with about 10 km left to go, the peloton caught the last riders from the breakaway. Everything was now set up for the expected bunch sprint in Nove Mesto. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka did well to keep Cavendish in a good position on the final kilometers. Ultimately, Bennett took the win but Cavendish proved to be on the right track after suffering from Epstein-Barr Virus for several months prior to the race. In the general classification, Rafal Majka (BORA – hansgrohe) had no problems keeping the green leader’s jersey to win Tour de Slovénie overall.
“Eisel and Renshaw did a brilliant job on the final kilometers, delivering me in a good position. Then, BORA came and I went on the wheel of Bennett. I kicked and passed him but it didn’t work out at the end. However, it’s been really nice here in Tour de Slovénie. I have enjoyed myself and I’m very happy that I came here to race”.
