Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka finished off this year’s Vuelta a Burgos with another strong performance by the team. Igor Antón and Merhawi Kudus both finished in Top10 overall, while Ben King won the overall intermediate sprints competition.
Today’s stage started out in a furious pace with countless attacks. It took nearly an hour of racing before a group of 14 riders managed to get away. Once again, Ben King made it into the breakaway, showing off his blue jersey as leader of the intermediate sprints. The American was already sure to win the competition as long as he finished the stage but that didn’t hold him back. King even won the last intermediate sprint of the race, proving to be a very worthy winner of the competition.
As the riders took on the final climb of the day, the break started to split up, leaving just one rider alone at the front. However, when race leader Mikel Landa (Team Sky) attacked on the final kilometers, only the best climbers were left at the front. Antón put up a courageous fight, giving it his all on the steep slopes towards the top. Ultimately, Miguel Ángel López (Astana) took the stage win in front of Enric Mas (Quick Step Floors) and Landa. Antón crossed the line in sixth place, while Kudus finished as number 14.
In the final general classification, Antón finished sixth with Kudus in ninth place. Landa won the race overall. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was fourth in the team classification.
“The team really supported me perfectly today. I had a bit of a crisis on the middle part of the final climb but I recovered and came back very strong on the last three kilometers. I’m really happy with my performance today. Now, I feel ready for the Vuelta”.
