The Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders put up a good fight on Friday’s undulating stage 5 in BinckBank Tour. Reinardt Janse van Rensburg came very close to joining the top GC riders as they got away on the final kilometers.
Today’s stage took place on roads known from the spring classic Amstel Gold Race. After the sprinters had had their say in three of the first four stages, the pre-race favorites now finally got a chance to put their mark on the race. A group of seven riders got away early on the stage but the peloton made sure to keep them on a tight leash.
As the riders took on the final 50 km, the peloton split up in the cross wind. Race leader Stefan Küng (BMC Racing Team) punctured at the same time and then found himself in the second group. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka also had a few riders caught behind. Luckily, the team managed to control the situation and get back to the front.
Meanwhile, the breakaway began to split up, ultimately leaving just a few riders at the front. On the final 15 km of the stage, several of the pre-race favorites attacked from the peloton and formed a new strong front group. Janse van Rensburg saw the danger and tried hard to bridge across on his own. Unfortunately, despite getting very close, he didn’t make it to the front.
At the end, Lars Boom (Team LottoNL – Jumbo) soloed away on the last kilometer to take the win and the leader’s jersey, while Janse van Rensburg crossed the line within the first chase group in 30th place together with Scott Thwaites (24th). The South African champion is now 49th overall as the team’s best-placed rider.
Reinardt Janse van Rensburg:
”This was a very hard final with lots of small roads, always going left and right and up and down. As we re-grouped after the big split in the peloton another group with Sagan managed to get away. I was chasing hard behind that group. I think I was only 10-20 meters behind them but I just couldn’t make it across. It’s a little bit disappointing”.
