BinckBank Tour #6: Tough day in the rain

Saturday’s stage in BinckBank Tour proved to be just as challenging as expected. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka and the rest of the peloton were in for a hard and wet day in the saddle.

Despite the rainy weather conditions, the day started out in a furious pace with countless attacks. It took a long time before a group of six riders finally managed to distance the peloton and get a gap. However, the pack didn’t fancy spending more time than needed on the undulating and slippery roads in Belgium. The breakaway was kept within reach at all time and as the riders crossed the finishing line for the penultimate time, it all came back together.

On the last 30 km, a strong group of GC riders got away. Pre-race favorite, Peter Sagan (BORA – hansgrohe) then attacked together with Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) but soon after, Sagan suffered a puncture and had to stop. Wellens continued alone and he was later joined by Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb).

The two riders worked well together and even though the chase group came very close to bridging across, the duo managed to make it all the way. Wellens took the stage win, while Dumoulin moved into the overall lead of the race. Kristian Sbaragli finished as best Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka rider in 32nd place. Reinardt Janse van Rensburg is still the team’s best-placed rider in the general classification as number 33.

Tomorrow, the BinckBank Tour ends with a mini Tour of Flanders stage finishing on the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen.
