BinckBank Tour #7: Janse van Rensburg in the mix on the final day

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka showed off its team colors impressively on Sunday’s last stage of BinckBank Tour. Jay Thomson was in the early breakaway, while Reinardt Janse van Rensburg fought with the top favorites in the final.

As it has been the case in the previous days, it took a while before the right group of riders finally managed to distance the peloton. Thomson was quick to join the decisive move and together with eight other riders, he spent most of the day at the front.

However, with the general classification and a prestigious stage win up for grabs, the peloton didn’t allow the breakaway to get too much of a gap. The pack always kept the front group within reach and with 25 km to go, it was all back together again.

The GC favorites started attacking each other on the final undulating lap. Many riders tried to get away but no one succeeded until Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) got clear with just a couple of kilometers to go. Janse Van Rensburg was very attentive and joined several breakaway attempts but without luck. Ultimately, Stuyven soloed to victory, narrowly keeping the chase group at bay. Janse Van Rensburg finished with the rest of the chasers in 25th place, which saw him move up to 27th place in the final general classification. Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) won the race overall.

Reinardt Janse van Rensburg:
”The last lap was very intense, real classic style. We rode really aggressively. I wanted to do a good result today but the legs just weren’t there in the final sprint. However, I was happy with the way I rode”.
