Matteo Trentin (Etixx-Quickstep) won the 13th stage of the Vuelta a Espana, sprinting to the victory ahead of Gianni Moscon (Team Sky) and Soren Kragh Andersen (Team Sunweb). Chris Froome (Team Sky) had no trouble holding on to the overall race lead.
While the 13th stage seemed to pose very little difficulty in terms of the route today at the Vuelta a Espana, for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka it was still a difficult day as we saw Omar Fraile abandon the race. Fraile finished 2nd on yesterday’s exciting 12th stage but fell ill overnight and had to withdraw midway through today’s stage.
Fraile is the 6th rider from our African Team to leave the race after illness already got the better of Ben King, Youcef Reguigui, Nic Dougall and Serge Pauwels while a heavy crash took out Merhawi Kudus. Now down to just just 3 riders, Igor Anton, Jacques Janse van Rensburg and Lachlan Morton will continue to fly our flag for the remaining 8 stages.

Today, we knew it would most likely be a sprint as this was a good day for Trentin. Therefore, for us, the main goal was to save energy for the hard up-coming days. Unfortunately, we lost Omar [Fraile] due to sickness and we are now down to just three riders, which doesn’t really help to keep the morale high. However, we will keep fighting. I said the same thing when we lost the other guys and we have really kept fighting hard every day.
