Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida) won the Giro dell Emilla after a 16km solo escape. Vincenzo Nibali made it a 1-2 for the Bahrain squad with Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) rounding out the podium.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka made it’s presence known early on at the Giro dell Emillia as Adrien Niyonshuti made the early break of the day. The 226km course was always going to come down to the final circuit laps which included the difficult 2km San Luca climb.

With Team Sky and Bahrain setting the pace in the peloton, Niyonshuti was reeled in with around 40km to go. As the rest of the break also came into sight, the counter attacks began. Ben King showed himself at the head of the race for our African Team and Mekseb Debesay was also still in the mix for the final, but the San Luca climb eventually took its toll on all but a select few riders. Visconti was one such rider who showed very little weakness on the steep gradients as he rode away with 16km to go.

As Team Sky rain at our resources to chase down Visconti, and Esteban Chaves (Orica-Scott) crashed heavily while leading the peloton, the impetus was taken out of the chase effort and Visconti soloed to a good win. Nibali easily policed matters behind before jumping clear for 2nd. Our African Team had Debesay cross the line as our best placed finisher on the day, taking 42nd.
