The 3rd stage of the Volta a la Comunitat went ahead today but the GC result was neutralised due to wet roads and strong winds, deemed too dangerous by race organisers.
As riders woke up to pouring rain and howling wind, nobody was all that motivated at the prospect of racing a 23km team time trial around Calpe in the afternoon. Race organisers would eventually announce that the GC results would not be affected by today’s stage, effectively neutralising the stage for the main contenders.
The stage still went ahead though, but with no pressure on teams to take any unnecessary risks. As Murphy’s Law would have it though, once the decision was made, the weather then made a turn for the better and conditions were not all that bad in the end. However, rider safety was the primary concern and the adjusted stage went ahead.
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka got around the course safely, not taking any risks and ensuring our leader in the young rider competition, Merhawi Kudus, had no issues ahead of tomorrows all-important mountain stage. At the line, BMC Racing clocked the fastest time with Astana Pro Team in 2nd and AG2R La Mondiale in 3rd place.
