Miguel Angel Lopez made it another memorable day for Astana as he won a tough 145.5km stage from Lavarone to Fiemme/Alpe di Pampeago.
What a ride from our young star Ben O’Connor as he finished 8th to make his mark on the race.
Ben O’Connor – Rider
“I know it’s cliché to say but the team was genuinely great today. We consciously stayed up towards the front via Lach for most of the day so for me and Louis it made for much simpler work.
“The run into the climb was fairly intense, but once we started that final climb it really just came down to power/weight.
“I felt really great once we hit the steep final 4kms and after a few accelerations I was still able to be with the top 10 until about 1.5km to go. I did my best to keep the power down and limit the losses.
“To actually be there and see guys like Chris Froome just ahead of you sprinting for a mountain-top finish and to then finish 8th for me is a great new achievement.
“It’s so exciting to see that dream of racing with the best in the mountains begin to come true.”
