Tour de Romandie #2: Solo escape steals stage

Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) won stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie after an impressive solo attack over the closing kilometers of the race. The peloton was led home by Sonny Collbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) for 2nd and Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) was 3rd.

Stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie was expected to be a day for the small group sprinters. When Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) got into the break of the day, he turned the stage on it’s head with his impressive strength. Riding away from his original breakaway mates, the peloton were not able to reel the Belgian in before the finish-line was reached in Yverdon-les-Bains.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka protected Merhawi Kudus throughout the stage, with the Eritrean being our overall GC contender. Unfortunately, Steve Cummings succumbed to illness during the stage and had to abandon the race but Jaco Venter and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier were able to sheppard Kudus all the way to the line, in the main group.
