Egan Bernal (Team Sky) rode to an impressive victory on stage two of the Tour of California that featured a mountain-top finish on Gibraltar Road.
The 12km climb to the finish (ave. gradient 8%) saw the overall race, as expected, blown wide open as Rafal Majka (BORA-hansgrohe) was second and Adam Yates (Mitchelton Scott) finished third. Lachlan Morton put in a strong performance to cross the line in 20th position.
With another stage featuring climbing followed by a time trial – the next sprinting opportunity presents itself on Thursday in Elk Grove – today saw our sprint team all safely home.
Rolf Aldag – Sports Director
We got our sprinting team through the stage pretty safely and Mark (Cavendish) and Mark (Renshaw) looked pretty alright and that’s pretty promising for the upcoming remaining two sprint stages. So that was a positive from today.
There were great crowds on the final climb, with fantastic scenery. The day was one of those that was probably fantastic to watch but not so nice to ride.
