The tough penultimate stage of the Amgen Tour of California saw Egan Bernal (Team Sky) solo to victory in South Lake Tahoe.
Lachlan Morton put in a strong ride for Team Dimension Data finishing just outside the top-10, in 14th place.
Earlier on in the race Tom-Jelte Slagter had spent most of the day in the 9-rider breakaway over the course of nearly 200km.
Only once he had been reeled in did the fireworks start with Morton initiating one of the first, riding straight past the remaining two escapees.
With a definitive day for the GC, Team Sky held the strongest hand, neutralising his move, with Bernal capturing his second stage win of the race.
Saturday’s final 143km stage finishes in Sacramento with an expected bunch sprint a final opportunity for our team at this year’s race.

It was a ride all day long. Having TJ in the move helped to take the pressure off us in the bunch.
The final climb was always going to be a big showdown between Team Sky and BMC. I was feeling good at the base of the climb and made an attack to try and anticipate the race a little and get in front of the big moves.
In the end I ran out of legs but fought hard to the finish as I felt I owed it to the whole team who have been amazing helping and keeping my spirits high this week.
