Adriatica Ionica Race #2: Cav suffers late puncture before being held up by crash

Elia Viviani’s (Quickstep) impressive season continued today as he took the win on stage 2 of the Adriatica Ionica Race. Simone Consonni (UAE-Emirates) sprinted home for 2nd place and Mihkel Raim (Israel Cycling Academy) was 3rd.

The 2nd stage of the Adriatica Ionica Race was a 152km race from Jesolo to Maser. The first half of the stage was rather straightforward but the back end of the stage was littered with short, sharp climbs. 3 riders formed the early break of the day and it was up to the race leader’s Quickstep team to control proceedings.

Quickstep kept the gap to just under 3’00” before UAE-Emirates and Trek-Segafredo took a keen interest in making the race harder as the peloton approached the climbs. The break was caught with around 16km to go and immediately fresh attacks followed on the undulations. It was at this crucial moment that our Mark Cavendish punctured.

Our Manxman did incredibly well to come back to the main group on the last of the 3 tough climbs but then a crash on the final descent split the group and unfortunately we were caught behind it. That put an end to any hopes we had for contesting for the stage. The reduced group sprinted it out for the stage and it was familiar face on the top step, as Viviani secured his 11th victory of the season.

It was the first road stage of the race and it was a hard stage, very hilly with a difficult final consisting of 3 typical Italian climbs up into the city. Mark was really good today and riding well but had bad luck when he punctured with 16km to go. He did his maximum to come back on the climb and then hung on on the final climb too. There were some crashes on the final descent which split the group and we couldn’t come back on the final short flat part of the stage.
