Ivan Sosa (Androni-Sidermec) won the 3rd stage of the Adriatica Ionica Race, reaching the summit of the Passo Giau ahead of Giulio Ciccone (Bardiani-CSF) and Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy).
The 3rd stage of the Adriatica Ionica Race was the big day for the GC contenders as the 158km stage included 3 massive mountains with the finish being at the summit of the Passo Giau. As our African Team started the event with no true climbers in our mix, this was a day to let the favourites dictate the stage.
All early breakaway attempts were nullified before the start of the Passo Giau and it was only a small group of around 30 riders that started the brutal 10km finishing climb together. The young Colombian from Androni was feeling at home on the 10% average gradient and left his rivals behind with just over 2km to go, soloing to the stage victory and overall race lead.
Our African Team riders came home with the grupetto after a tough day out on the bike but will be up to contend for the stage victories over the coming two day’s, with Mark Cavendish targeting the expected sprint finishes.
