Preview: Tour of Austria

This weekend Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka will not only be starting the Tour de France, but once again our African Team will be lining up at the UCI 2.HC Tour of Austria on Saturday, in Feldkirch.

Austria’s premier national tour will consist of 8 road stages this year, with 2 mighty summit finishes, stage 3 finishing up the Kitzbuheler Horn and stage 5 up the Grosglockner, these being the two key stages of the race. The Tour of Austria has been a happy hunting ground for our African Team in the past, thinking back to just last year when Ben O’Connor soloed to victory on stage 5.

For this years edition of the race it is not surprising that we will have a climber focused team for the 8-stage race. Louis Meintjes will head up our roster with Steve Cummings, Ben King, Jacques Janse van Rensburg and Lachlan Morton all ready for the uphill Austrian gradients.

Scott Thwaites will make a welcome return to racing after recovering from his training crash in March. Completing our line-up will be former Tour of Austria stage winner, Johann van Zyl.

The Tour of Austria is a race we enjoy coming to each year. It serves as a great platform for many of our riders to kick start the second part of their season and we have had some good success here in the past. Johann van Zyl and Ben O’Connor have both won stages at the Tour of Austria for us, and our team at this year’s edition will be hoping for similar stage success again.

Austria famed for its Alpine ski slopes also boasts one of the world’s most beautiful Ski jumps in Innsbruck – the Bergisel Ski Jump, designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid.

The Tour of Austria doesn’t pass through Innsbruck (probably because the city hosts the World Champs later this year) but it isn’t short of steep slopes.

An Austrian pass is not only one of the most beautiful but also most brutal to ascend on a bicycle. Kind of like riding up a ski jump; the view is nice from the top.
