A pulsating final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos capped off a fine week of exciting racing and saw Igor Anton finish 5th on the day and fourth overall for our African team. Merhawi Kudus finished 7th and Louis Meintjes was 9th, overall.
Ivan Sosa (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) won Saturday’s final stage by 19 seconds ahead of Miguel Angel Lopez and ultimately finished ahead of him by 17 seconds on the GC with David de la Cruz third, 11 seconds ahead of Anton. His performance on the day saw him earn the day’s ‘combativity’award.
Kudus, who had started the day in third on the GC, finished the final stage in 13th position and dropped down to seventh overall. While Meintjes retained his place in 9th after he placed 10th in Lagunas de Neila.
The team competition was won by Sky with our team coming second in a big boost ahead of the upcoming Vuelta a Espana.
Igor Anton – Rider
The whole week but specifically this morning, I was really motivated and I really wanted to make an impact. In the final stages of the stage once again the team worked really well together. Amanuel helped in the final kilometres, along with Steve and Ben too. I tried with 7 or 8km left to go with a small group and for a moment I was dreaming, not necessarily to win the GC, but with an eye on the podium but unfortunately I missed out by just a few seconds to David de la Cruz.
I’m really happy you know, I put everything into the race and earned a small prize with the “combative” award so overall I’m happy, I don’t think that I could have done anymore.
We were second by a small margin in the team classification but it’s important motivation for us going to the Vuelta a Espana. In my case it’s not been the best year but now I’m improving.
