Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) won Stage 19 ahead of Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) and Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo).
Stage 19 was a relatively flat stage starting in Lleida and ending in Andorra. The summit finish was the category one climb of Coll de la Rabassa. With a lot at stake for the general classification leaders, the pace at the start was fast. Multiple attacks were shut down by the pelotone, and the first break of the day included Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier for Team Dimension Data, but the break was brought back.
Two riders made it away soon afterwards, but Movistar kept them on a short leash and they were caught as they neared the base of Coll de la Rabassa. The general classification race blew up on climb, with a front group of Simon Yates, Pinot and Kruijswijk going ahead to decide the winner of the stage. Pinot claimed the win ahead of Yates, who gained more time in the leader’s jersey.
Ben King was our highest placed rider, riding strongly to finish 24th on the stage. He moved up to 22nd in the GC.
Bingen Fernandez- Sports Director
“We were hoping that today a big break would be allowed up the road. The guys started with full attention and followed all the first moves, Amanuel made a break of three but Movistar showed from early that they wanted to control the race. The break slowed, hoping more riders could jump across but eventually, Movistar closed everything and it was clear it was a GC day, also for the stage. Tomorrow is sure to be a tough day so we will hope to take advantage of this and show our colours at the front once again.”
