Preview: Giro Toscana & Coppa Sabatini

The end of season Italian one day classics begin this week, with the Giro della Toscana the first appointment for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, taking place on Wednesday 19 September. The following day, our African Team will then line up for the Coppa Sabatini.

The Giro della Toscana, this year a UCI 1.1 event, will take place just a few kilometers from our Italian base in Lucca. The 198km race takes place mostly around the famous Monte Serra, a mountain known well to nearly all of our riders, with 3 ascents of the Calci side of the mountain. This year’s edition of the race will certainly be a climbers race.

The Coppa Sabatini returns to it’s familiar circuit route around Peccioli with final short sharp climb into town once again set to be the only main difficulty on the day. A reduced group sprint is the expected outcome for the UCI 1.1 event on Thursday.

Our African Team will have 8 riders ready for action, with Edvald Boasson Hagen headlining the team. Ben O’Connor, Lachlan Morton, Tom-Jelte Slagter, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Natnael Berhane and Julien Vermote will start Toscana while Nic Dlamini comes in for Vermote at Coppa Sabatini.

Julien Vermote – Rider

I’m really happy to be back racing and with the guys. I’ve been really looking forward to that day again (and now it’s finally here). When you get an injury it’s always difficult to predict when you’re back but as soon as I started planning a return with Mattia Micheulsi (coach) we started talking about this race. I requested from the team to compete here as it wasn’t on my original schedule which I’m really grateful for.

It’s always nice to race in Italy – nice atmosphere, great culture and obviously a rich cycling culture too, so it’s always a pleasure to be here. I haven’t done this race before so it’s hard to make a prediction but we will see tomorrow! We have a good team here and I’m happy to be here and we will go for it.
