Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) sprinted to the stage 3 victory at Itzulia Basque Country. Diego Ulissi (UAE-Emirates) placed 2nd with Enrico Battaglin (Katusha-Alpecin) taking 3rd.

It was a busy day for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, starting with Ben King jumping into the early break of the day. Unfortunately, less positive news soon followed as Steve Cummings was involved in a crash that saw him abandon the race.

Cummings was taken to the local hospital for further examination.

“Steve crashed around 25km into today’s stage 3 of Itzulia Basque Country and had to stop the race. After further examinations, scans revealed that Steve has a fracture of the left clavicle. Fortunately, at this stage surgery will not be required as part of his recovery process. We will continue to monitor Steve until he has made a full recovery.” – Dr Samuel Fisser, Team Doctor

In the final, as King’s breakaway group was caught, another crash took out a number of favourites. Amanuel Ghebreigzbhier was able to elude the carnage that took out the likes of Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quickstep) & Geraint Thomas (Team Sky).

Ghebreigzabhier, slightly boxed in for the final 1000m uphill sprint, fought to the line to take 15th on the stage.

“I am happy that my condition is slowly getting better. It is not top, I still have work to do to get that real good feeling back but I was still in contention today so that is positive signs. Most importantly, I hope Steve is okay and can recover fast after his crash today.” – Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier
