Maxmilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) took out the opening individual time trial stage of Itzulia Basque Country. Daniel Martinez (EF Education First) was 2nd and Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) finished 3rd.

The opening time trial of the Itzulia Basque Country was a stern test as the 11.3km route included a steep 2.2km climb. To make matters more interesting, there was a torrential downpour in the early part of the stage, making the course rather slippery initially but drying out somewhat for the final starters.

Despite the tricky conditions, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier put in a solid ride to finish just 46″ down on the time Schachmann was able to do in dryer conditions.

“I was happy with my ride today. The climb was very steep and the descent to the finish very slippery. I went as fast as I could but it was not so easy. In Catalunya my condition was not so good, so I was a little nervous today but I am glad my legs are coming back.” – Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier
