Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) successfully defended his South African road race title, beating our Ryan Gibbons and Stefan de Bod into the minor podium placings.

A tough 162km circuit race around the City of Tshwane played host to the South African road race championships. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had the numbers advantage with 7 strong riders on the start line but defending champion Daryl Impey, as one of the top riders in the world, was going to be tough to beat.

Our African Team was able to get into a good position with Nicholas Dlamini up the road, solo in the final 15km, and Impey chasing behind with our entire team in tow.

On the final lap of the 15-lap race, Impey made his big move on the final time up the steep Tom Jenkins road and leap-frogged Dlamini, going into the lead.

Ryan Gibbons and Stefan de Bod gave chase, but the currently ranked number 1 rider on the World Tour would not be caught. Impey took an impressive win with our Team Dimension Data riders securing 6 of the top 8 places, led by Gibbons and de Bod in 2nd & 3rd respectively.
