Reinardt Janse van Rensburg hauled himself to a fighting 5th spot finish in a chaotic final on stage four of the Tour of California that finished in Morro Bay.

The stage was won by Fabio Jakobsen (DQT) ahead of Jasper Philipsen (UAE) and Peter Sagan (Bora). Nacer Bouhanni of Cofidis was fourth.

Team Dimension Data had been fairly comfortable throughout the day and were looking at going one better following Ben King’s heroics in finishing second in stage 3.

But hopes of winning the stage were all but put paid to after a big crash in the finale saw a number of riders fall heavily, and a number of our team caught up in it. That saw Mark Cavendish unable to contest the sprint finish and also no support for Janse van Rensburg in the final run in to the line.

As per the team’s medical protocol, a full check on all of the riders will be conducted post-stage and, if required, further updates will be made in due course.
