Reinardt Janse van Rensburg scored an impressive 5th place finish on stage 5 of the UAE Tour, in a race won in a photo-finish by Elia Viviani (DQS).

It was an impressive display from ‘The Beast’ who had been left ruing his previous days efforts at Hatta Dam.

Our team had been looking at positioning Mark Cavendish for the finale but the Manxman had a mechanical issue inside the final 6km that all but put paid to his chances.

This result comes in what has been a frustrating week for the team after their strong performance in the opening team time trial.

He said it

“We tried to get Mark onto one of the wheels in the trains and it was looking good until about 2km to go and then everything seemed to stall down. Guys wer coming from behind and I lost Mark a little bit. Fortunately, because we were trying to get onto other wheels, I didn’t have to go into the wind at all so I could still do a sprint.

“I found myself on Kittel’s wheel with 500m to go but those guys are a little too fast to come around but I tried and 5th place in the end.”
