The final stage of the 2019 Vuelta a San Juan was a 9-lap flat stage around the town of San Juan with the stage won by Sam Bennett (BOH).

Team Dimension Data executed a near-perfect leadout for Mark Cavendish but his chances were scuppered in the final few hundred metres as he suffered a front-wheel puncture to finish 12th. Alvaro Hodeg (DQS) was second and Erik Baska (BOH) was third.

It brought to an end a solid week for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka that saw Gino Mäder and Rasmus Tiller ride for our team for the first time.

The former had an excellent outing; he finished second in the Young Rider category just two seconds behind Remco Evenepoel (DQS) and 11th on the General Classification. With the slightest touch of better luck in the queen stage (5) he could have taken the jersey as he impressed.

He said it

“Today was fast & furious from the beginning. Lots of attacking. The plan was clear: we were going for the sprint for Cav. In the end we delivered him really well into the final kilometre, unfortunately he had a flat tyre but still the team managed to work well together and next time we will win.

“Overall it was a nice week for me, I’m quite happy with the performance not only from myself but also from the team. We did a really good job in working together for one goal and hopefully it’ll continue like that.” – Gino
Mäder

The race also saw the racing return of Mark Cavendish after a long lay-off due to illness and despite him suffering, along with his teammates, in the extreme heat in the early stages he finished the race in good form.
